Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has served notice that telecommunications companies must significantly enhance their service delivery before the end of 2025.
According to him, beginning in the first quarter of 2026, both the Ministry and the National Communications Authority (NCA) will enforce stricter measures to ensure telecom operators comply with their quality-of-service (QoS) obligations.
Speaking to Accra-based TV3, he stressed that the Ministry has already issued clear policy directives to support the regulator’s renewed enforcement drive.
“The ministry is giving policy direction, and the regulator has started action on that,” he noted.
Sam George further disclosed that the government has released additional spectrum resources to the telecom industry to facilitate improvements in voice and data services.
“The ministry made action of spectrum resources available very early in the term,” he said.
In April 2025, he authorised the NCA to allocate extra spectrum to major operators to help resolve longstanding connectivity challenges, including dropped calls, slow internet speeds, and unstable networks.
However, he clarified that improvements in spectrum utilisation do not occur instantly, explaining that operators typically require between three and six months to upgrade equipment, configure systems, and complete deployments.
“We’ve given them up to the end of the year. I’ve announced that publicly. The regulator is going to become more stringent when it comes to quality of service and performance KPIs from the first quarter of next year,” he noted.
He added that the NCA is working closely with telecom operators and the Chamber of Telecommunications to drive improvements in the customer experience.
“They’re doing a lot of work with the telcos and the chamber of telecoms to ensure better data experience,” he stated.
