The Electoral Commission of Ghana has begun processes to create 25 new constituencies.
The new constituencies include the one from the Guan district after voters in the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lipke and Lolobi (SALL) Traditional Areas were allowed to vote in the Buem constituency for the 2020 Presidential elections but were not allowed to participate in the Parliamentary elections.
On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, the Order Paper addendum captured the creation of the Guan constituency.
The said Constitutional Instrument titled “Representation of the People (Parliamentary Constituencies) (Amendment) Instrument, 2023,” is expected to be laid before the house by the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
This amendment aims to establish the new constituency, in addition to the existing 275 constituencies in the country.
It’s however expected that a bill to create additional constituencies for the 2024 general elections will be tabled before the House for consideration after extensive stakeholder considerations.
The Electoral Commission (EC) had previously indicated its ongoing efforts to create new constituencies.
“We are in the process of creating some new constituencies, and Guan District is one of them. If not because parliament is on recess, we should have started the process in parliament,” Dr Bossman Asare said in an earlier interview on Accra-based TV3 last month.
Dr. Bossman Asare disclosed that the Guan District is among the areas set to receive a new constituency, as the Commission initiates the process of creating new constituencies for the 2024 elections.
In an earlier interview, First Deputy Minority Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, also hinted at the EC’s moves to create 25 constituencies.
