The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has fired back at Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin over his warning that the institution’s leadership could face “scary” bail conditions in the near future if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) returns to power.
Responding to the warning at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Mr Gyamfi said he was not intimidated by the prospect of facing criminal charges or onerous bail conditions, describing the Minority Leader’s comments as an attempt to intimidate him and the GoldBod leadership.
The Minority Leader, Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, said the conditions imposed on some individuals under investigation could set a precedent that may have consequences for officials of the current administration when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) returns to power.
He linked his warning to what he claimed were losses of about GH¢22 billion associated with the government’s domestic gold purchasing programme, although the claims remain a subject of political debate.
But Sammy Gyamfi has dismissed the concerns and accused Mr Afenyo-Markin of failing to properly assess GoldBod’s performance before making such claims.
He also criticised the tone of Mr Afenyo-Markin’s remarks, describing them as “the fanciful efficiency of a palm wine bar”.
He said the comments should be treated as comic relief rather than serious parliamentary commentary.
The GoldBod CEO further criticised Mr Afenyo-Markin for what he described as a departure from the standard of debate associated with previous occupants of the Minority Leader position, including J.H. Mensah, Papa Owusu-Ankomah and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
“So I will go to prison in his brain, and I will have onerous bail terms in his brain, and I am not afraid of any intimidating tactics because we are serving Ghana in good conscience and our results and posterity will speak for us,” Mr Gyamfi said.
