The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced a major fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line, which resulted in disruptions to power supply in parts of the country on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
According to GRIDCo, the fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m. on the national power system and triggered the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units, as well as some thermal generating plants.
The company explained that the automatic tripping was activated as part of the protection mechanisms designed to safeguard the integrity and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
GRIDCo said the incident consequently resulted in the loss of power supply to some parts of the country, prompting its engineers, in collaboration with other power sector agencies, to immediately take steps to isolate the affected transmission line.
It said engineers subsequently commenced the safe and systematic restoration of the power system, with power supply already restored to some of the affected areas.
However, GRIDCo indicated that restoration efforts were still ongoing to ensure that electricity supply was returned to all remaining affected customers as quickly and safely as possible.
The company expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the temporary outage and assured the public that all relevant technical teams had been fully mobilised and were working with urgency to achieve complete restoration of the power system.
GRIDCo further said it would continue to provide updates as more information became available and appealed to the public for patience, understanding and cooperation as restoration efforts continued.
