The Mampong Akuapem Apesemakahene, Nana Yirenkyi I, has dismissed reports circulating on social media that the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has been arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The reports emerged on Sunday morning, sparking speculation over the whereabouts of the MP and former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA).
However, Nana Yirenkyi I has described the claims as false and urged the public to disregard them.
According to him, Sammi Awuku was present at the New Patriotic Party’s Eastern Regional delegates conference held at Asamankese on Saturday, August 15, where he participated in the voting process before leaving for other engagements in the Ashanti Region.
He said the MP remains active and described him as a hardworking and well-respected politician who enjoys the support and goodwill of many people.
“Some people are deliberately trying to tarnish the image of our brother and hardworking MP, but their efforts will not succeed,” Nana Yirenkyi I said.
He questioned why an alleged arrest of an elected Member of Parliament would not be accompanied by an official statement from the relevant authorities.
Nana Yirenkyi I urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid sharing unsubstantiated claims circulating on social media.
He further cautioned individuals allegedly behind the reports that Ghanaian laws provide sanctions for certain forms of false information and that persons found responsible could be required to answer before the appropriate authorities and the courts.
