“Cybercrime Does Not Pay” – Sam George Warns Youth, Urges Focus on Education

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has warned the youth against the growing temptation of cyber fraud and illegal mining (galamsey), stressing that illegal wealth does not bring true success or peace.

Sam George, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, stressed the increasing number of young people being lured into these illicit activities as a dangerous distraction from more sustainable paths to success.

“There are boys being lured with cyber fraud, others with galamsey. There are all kinds of distractions, but there is only one sure way to a successful and peaceful life. Education is the only thing nobody can take away from you. They can take your cars, your houses, everything you have, but what you know and what you’ve learned cannot be taken away from you. Education is the priceless gift a child can get from their parents,” he told newsalertgh.com on the sidelines of the 2025 Ningo-Prampram Teachers Awards and Retirees Send-Off ceremony held on Friday, December 12, 2025.

He further urged the youth to remain focused on their education, insisting that it’s the key to lasting success and peace.

“I am living proof that education pays. I urge all the young kids to take their education seriously.”

Drawing from recent law enforcement actions, the MP cautioned that although cyber fraud and illegal mining might appear lucrative in the short term, they are ultimately hollow paths to success. He cited the Cyber Security Authority’s recent operations, which have led to the arrest of several individuals involved in cybercrime.

“Just yesterday, one of my agencies, the Cyber Security Authority, picked up an individual (Abu Trica) who is supposed to be ‘successful.’ There is no peace with that kind of success, and there are three more we’re picking up in the next few days because we’re cracking down on cybercrime. Cybercrime does not pay.”

Sam George also appealed to teachers to remain patient and supportive despite the challenges of modern society. He acknowledged that today’s children face unprecedented distractions, especially from the internet and technology, and called for greater patience in helping them stay focused on their studies.

“Today’s children live in a very difficult world. The distractions of the internet and technology are enough to take them away from the classroom, so we need to be patient and give them the impetus to stay and succeed.”
