Koforidua is today the focus of national attention as the final funeral rites for late Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah are currently underway at Jackson’s Park in the Eastern Regional capital.
The solemn ceremony, which began at midday in the New Juaben South Municipality, has drawn senior government officials, leaders and executives of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), traditional authorities, party supporters and members of the public to pay their last respects to the late statesman.
Dr Omane Boamah, who also served as Director of Elections and Information Technology of the NDC, died on August 6, 2025, in a tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of all eight persons on board. The Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9EH helicopter, with tail number GHF 631, went down during an official operation.
The crash also claimed the lives of Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology; Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice-Chair; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
As the funeral rites proceed, tributes continue to pour in from across the political divide, with many speakers and sympathisers describing Dr Omane Boamah as a dedicated public servant whose contribution to national security, party organisation and democratic governance left a lasting imprint on Ghana’s political landscape.
