President John Dramani Mahama has launched the first-ever KPIs for Ghana’s ambassadors and envoys under his Reset Agenda.
Speaking at the Ambassadors’ Conference in Accra on Monday, September 1, 2025, which also served as an orientation for new envoys, President Mahama said Ghana’s foreign service must move beyond ceremonial duties to deliver tangible outcomes for the country’s development.
“For too long, diplomacy has been reduced to pomp and protocol. That era is over. From now on, our missions abroad will be assessed by the investments, trade, and opportunities they help secure for our people,” he noted.
The President revealed that envoys would be evaluated against eight key benchmarks, highlighting economic diplomacy, consular services, diaspora relations, financial accountability, and security compliance as top priorities.
He also noted that the new approach aligns with his Reset Agenda, which seeks to generate decent jobs through the 24-hour economy initiative, a Women’s Development Bank, an Agri-Reset programme, and large-scale youth apprenticeships.
“The success of these programmes rests heavily on the partnerships you strike abroad. Deals signed in Washington, Brussels, or Beijing must translate into jobs and opportunities in Tamale, Kumasi, Ho, and Accra.”
He directed envoys to aggressively promote Ghana as a destination for investment in renewable energy, agro-processing, industrialisation, infrastructure, tourism, and digital services. In addition, missions are to champion the export of Ghanaian products such as processed cocoa, shea butter, textiles, crafts, and ICT solutions.
Mahama also stressed that Ghana’s foreign policy will remain rooted in Pan-African solidarity, climate diplomacy, and unwavering support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“Economic diplomacy will be the anchor of Ghana’s engagement with the world,” the President stressed.
