On Celebrating Black Excellence: The Essence, a segment on Dominion TV’s Wake Up Africa morning show, host Korku Lumor led a discussion on African identity and the need for a mindset shift.
He was joined by Sherrie Donaldson-Thompson, founder of Sun-Shade Energy, and Jahzara Agyemang, M.Ed, founder and Executive Director of Vince Memorial Garden.
Miss Donaldson-Thompson highlighted how many Africans struggle with their identity, emphasizing that the church has a critical role to play in addressing this issue. She called for church institutions to actively encourage diverse career paths beyond conventional professions.
“What are the job fairs that are going on in the church environment? You must give people the opportunity to understand who they are in the environment and community, and tell them that it is not all about doctors, bankers and lawyers but also artists, musicians, fashion designers, caterers etc.,” she said.
Mrs. Agyemang added that the responsibility of reshaping perspectives goes beyond the church. She stressed that schools, families and society as a whole must contribute to changing how young people view success and self-worth.
The discussion underscored the urgent need for a collective effort to redefine African identity, celebrate cultural heritage, and embrace a wider range of career and personal development opportunities.
