Becoming MP Is a Divine Call to Impact Lives – Edem Agbana Awards GHC1.3M Scholarships to 302 Students

The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has described his election as a divine calling rather than mere politics, emphasizing his commitment to transforming lives. He made this heartfelt statement during the launch of the Edem Agbana Scholarship Scheme, an educational initiative designed to support brilliant but financially disadvantaged students in his constituency.

The scholarship program, which received widespread commendation from chiefs, residents, and stakeholders across the country, awarded financial aid to 302 students in its first phase. Edem Agbana also acknowledged donors and pledged to contribute 50% of his monthly salary to sustain the initiative.

Addressing attendees at the launch in Dzodze on Sunday, March 2, 2025, he stated, “This scheme is dedicated to offering vital financial assistance to tertiary students from Ketu North, ensuring that financial challenges do not stand in the way of their educational dreams.”

Out of nearly 1,000 applicants, 300 students were initially selected through a rigorous screening process, with two additional beneficiaries added before finalization.

The scholarship program places special emphasis on marginalized communities. Notably, 22 students with disabilities will receive full tuition coverage, while 25 young women pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs have also been awarded full scholarships.

Edem Agbana highlighted the significance of inclusion, stating that investing in these groups would contribute to a more skilled and diverse workforce.

Expressing concern over the financial struggles students face, he remarked, “It is heartbreaking to witness bright and hardworking young individuals from Ketu North unable to pursue higher education due to financial constraints.”

He further explained that his role as an MP transcends political ambition, stating, “Becoming a Member of Parliament is not just about politics for me; it is a calling to serve, a divine mandate to uplift lives. I believe God has placed me here as an instrument of His love and grace.”

The scholarship is funded through a combination of personal contributions, corporate sponsorships, and community support. A significant donation of GH¢100,000 was made by Gabriel Kwamegah-Atokple Tanko, the Volta Region’s Council of State representative. Additionally, Edem Agbana has instructed his bankers to transfer half of his salary into the scholarship fund every month to ensure its continuity.

Beyond financial assistance, the MP highlighted the importance of academic performance, stating that beneficiaries must maintain strong grades to continue receiving support. “We want to nurture a culture of excellence, ensuring that our students remain focused and motivated in their studies,” he said.

Looking ahead, Edem Agbana revealed plans to prioritize scholarships for professional courses such as medicine, law, and engineering in the next academic year.

Expressing his long-term vision, he noted that within the next 10 to 15 years, Ketu North would produce some of Ghana’s finest professionals, thanks to this initiative.
