President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Dr. Dodzie Numekevor, effective immediately.
According to sources from the Jubilee House, the decision follows the deteriorating state of the country’s sports infrastructure, particularly its football pitches which has led to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) banning Ghana from using the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. The facility, which was the only approved venue for international games in the country, failed to meet CAF’s standards despite repeated warnings. As a result, the stadium was deemed unfit for hosting international matches.
Dr Numekevor was appointed as interim Director General on February 26, 2024, after the departure of Professor Peter Twumasi, who had served in the role for six years.
The decision to relieve Dr Numekevor of his post comes at a time when Ghana is set to play its upcoming AFCON 2025 home qualifier against Sudan in October at a neutral venue, with Morocco, Ivory Coast, or Nigeria as potential alternatives.
