Yagbonwura Bans Group Hunting In Savannah

The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom and President of the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs, Yagbonwura Soale Jewu Biikunuto has placed a permanent ban on the activities of group hunting in the Savannah Region.

Addressing the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs general meeting on Tuesday 27th February 2024, Yagbonwura Soale Biikunuto indicated the Mole National Park which he described as the pride of the Savannah Region and a national asset is under serious threat by the activities of group hunting which needs serious attention to curb the menance.

He mentioned further that some of the deities, gods and critical taboos per custom and tradition of the land are being trampled upon anytime group hunting activities are carried on in the region including the stealing of domestic animals and farm products by these group hunters who usually enter the region from different regions especially the Northern Region with indiscriminate fire burning being the order of the day in addition.

On election 2024, the Yagbonwura advocated for peace before, during and after the election since Ghana’s pride is all about peace, adding that the country can go into the election minus insults, attacks, insubordination and disrespect amongst supporters of the various political parties.

Emphasizing on building a stronger better kingdom, the King pleaded with the custodians of custom and tradition by making a clarion call encouraging that this regime is a legacy-focused one and so therefore, their foremost attention should concentrate on building impactful legacies for the generations yet unborn and that the success of the house will depend on their unity and love for roles assigned them as chiefs with the utmost sincerity in discharging responsibilities.

Savannah Regional Minister Hon. Saeed Muhazu Jibril in an address congratulated the Yagbonwura for organizing the meeting since it is about deliberating about the people in the region, especially in the areas of peace, unity and development and also safeguarding the lands and environment of the Savannah Region.

He said one of the most important aspects of the overlord’s speech is how to make the various structures of the Savannah Region function effectively since every structure needs free hands to function especially the various committees.

He added that the Savannah Region has issues of chieftaincy and land disputes with our ownselves in the region, mentioning Bole with Kong traditional areas and Kulaw vrs Debre traditional areas disputes which the region must iron out their differences for the development of the region to progress.

He commended the Buipewura for stopping group hunting in his traditional area which many of the traditional areas must emulate.

He assured the house that REGSEC would collaborate with other regions to stop the act.

He disclosed further that the Savannah Regional House of Chiefs Office Complex is expected to move to the site anytime soon within the week and by next year, the house will have their own apartment instead of renting.

He reminded the chiefs that they have important roles to play in the various assemblies for development to take place.

He asked especially the Paramount chiefs to always liaise with the various MMDCEs since they are part of the local government system.

He thanked the house for the opportunity given to him to address the house.
