Head Coach of Ghana’s Black Stars Chris Hughton has officially named his squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 in Cote D’Ivoire. The list is not without its surprises and notable omissions, as Hughton aims to assemble a formidable team to contend for continental glory.
Among the standout inclusions are Salisu Mohammed, Alexander Djiku, and Richmond Lamptey making the 27-man squad.
However, the absence of Arsenal’s midfield maestro, Thomas Partey, has cast a shadow over the squad announcement. Partey, a pivotal figure for club and country, is sidelined due to a prolonged injury layoff. The Gunners’ star had been instrumental in Ghana’s qualifying campaign, making his absence all the more significant for Hughton’s plans.
Thomas Partey’s injury struggles have been well-documented, with the player facing setbacks that have kept him out of action for an extended period. He’s not the only notable player axed from the team as Brighton and Hove defender, Tariq Lamptey, Leicester City’s Fatawu Issahaku and PAOK defender Baba Rahman are missing out due to many issues.
Three Ghana Premier League players have however been named in Hughton’s 27-man squad with Asante Kotoko’s Richmond Lamptey making the cut.
The other two are Medeama duo Hamid Abdul Fatawu and Jonathan Sowah who gained their maiden Black Stars call-ups under the Irish trainer.
