The Accra High Court will today, Tuesday, July 11, 2023, deliver its ruling on the application for a stay of proceedings in the case involving James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North. -Quayson is currently facing charges of forgery and perjury and is undergoing trial at the High Court in Accra.
The legal team representing the MP has filed an application requesting the court to suspend the proceedings, allowing the Court of Appeal to review a decision made by the trial judge to hear the case on a day-to-day basis. Lead counsel Tsatsu Tsikata argued that proceeding with the trial without staying the proceedings would prejudice the pending appeal.
However, the prosecution, led by Godfred Yeboah Dame, opposed the application. The Attorney-General stated that the application is based on irrelevant matters, distortion of facts, and confusion. The AG argued against granting a stay of proceedings in a criminal trial, noting that the application lacked exceptional circumstances justifying such action. He further contended that the application was simply an attempt to frustrate the ongoing criminal trial of the Assin North MP.
Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament is set to again boycott proceedings and follow their colleague to court.
The NDC MPs have served notice that whenever the embattled MP appears in court, they’ll accompany him.
