The National Peace Council (NPC) has called on aspirants vying for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential flagbearer position to strictly adhere to the principles of the Peace Pact signed ahead of the party’s internal elections, describing it as critical to party unity and national cohesion.
The call was made during an engagement with party stakeholders, where a Member of the NPC Governing Board, Nana Effah-Apenteng, commended the NPP for demonstrating leadership and commitment to internal harmony by adopting the Peace Pact. He noted that strong internal cohesion within political parties plays a significant role in promoting national stability and democratic resilience.
According to Nana Effah-Apenteng, the commitment to resolving intra-party disputes through non-violent means provides assurance of sustained peace among party leaders and supporters. He urged all aspirants to place the collective interest of the party and the nation above personal ambition, accept the outcome of the electoral process, and embrace peace regardless of the results.
In a related development, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, assured the NPP of the Ghana Police Service’s preparedness to provide adequate security at all polling stations. He said the police remain committed to ensuring a peaceful, credible, and orderly electoral process.
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also emphasised the importance of unity within the party, describing it as a strategic necessity rather than an option. He urged aspirants to run issue-based campaigns devoid of personal attacks, stressing that the NPP is bigger than any individual and must remain focused on winning the confidence of Ghanaians.
Explaining the significance of the Peace Pact, the Chairman of the Party’s Election Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, said the agreement guarantees transparency in the electoral process. He noted that the pact commits all aspirants to accept the outcome of the January 31 presidential primary and to rally behind whoever emerges victorious.
The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for discipline, civility, and unity among aspirants. He cautioned that the stakes involved transcend individual ambitions, urging all contenders to conduct themselves responsibly to ensure the party remains united and prepared to serve Ghana once again.
