The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has renewed the curfew imposed on Nkwanta Township and its environs in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, following continued security concerns in the area.
The renewal, which takes effect from Monday, January 19, 2026, was issued by Executive Instrument on the advice of the Oti Regional Security Council. Under the new directive, the curfew hours remain from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. daily.
In a statement signed by Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Minister for the Interior said government reiterated its commitment to restoring calm and safeguarding lives and property in the affected communities. The Interior Ministry called on Chiefs, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and residents of Nkwanta and surrounding areas to exercise restraint despite the challenges confronting them.
The statement urged all stakeholders to adopt peaceful and non-violent means in addressing grievances, stressing that sustained peace can only be achieved through dialogue, tolerance, and collective responsibility.
As part of the enhanced security measures, the government has also imposed a total ban on the carrying of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons within Nkwanta Township and its environs. The Minister warned that any person found in possession of such weapons will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The curfew renewal forms part of broader efforts by government and security agencies to stabilise the area and prevent a further escalation of tensions, while creating the space needed for mediation and long-term peacebuilding initiatives.
