A flagbearer hopeful of the largest opposition New Patriotic Party, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has outlined a bold plan to transform Ghana’s economy, drawing inspiration from the famed Asian Miracle.
According to the former Assin Central MP, Ghana can replicate the rapid rise of Asian economies such as Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan by adopting a model where the government actively nurtures local industries through targeted policies, credit facilities, subsidies, and direct financial assistance.
Speaking at the 2025 National Emerging Leaders Economic Forum held at the University of Professional Studies on Monday, September 21, 2025, Mr Agyapong stressed that such support must be coupled with strict accountability.
“Support came in the form of targeted policies, credit facilities, subsidies, and direct financial assistance. Companies that used these resources effectively were strengthened, while those that failed to deliver were replaced by better managers to ensure efficiency and results.”
This, he argued, would instil discipline, reward hard work, and ensure resources are used productively to build globally competitive industries.
Mr Agyapong also expressed confidence in Ghana’s potential, stressing that with courage, discipline, and determination, the nation can achieve an industrial revolution modelled on strategies that have already proven successful elsewhere.
