The Principal of Ohawu Agricultural College, Ernest M.K. Abiew, has disclosed that the institution is grappling with numerous infrastructural and logistical challenges that threaten the smooth delivery of its mandate.
The Principal was speaking at the launch of the 2025 Hogbetsotsoza at Ohawu in the Ketu North Municipality.
He noted that the college, which was established to train agricultural professionals for national development, is currently overwhelmed by a lack of critical facilities. These challenges include limited access to potable water, inadequate internet connectivity, insufficient staff bungalows and student halls, as well as a shortage of lecture halls and furniture.
He further highlighted the absence of a well-equipped animal health and production clinic, in addition to a limited number of administrative and supporting staff, among many other pressing needs.
Despite these obstacles, the Principal expressed optimism about the future of the college, citing the government’s ongoing commitment to upgrading Ohawu Agricultural College into a fully-fledged agricultural university.
“Regardless of the above challenges, the college hopes for a better future and considerable changes in the delivery of its mandate, considering the government’s commitment to upgrading the institution to a full-scale agricultural university,” he affirmed.
The call comes at a time when stakeholders and traditional leaders in the Volta Region are pushing for the transformation of Ohawu Agricultural College to help advance agricultural innovation, create employment opportunities, and strengthen food security in the country.
