The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has revealed a historic milestone in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) gold exports, reporting an unprecedented 11 tonnes exported in the latest reporting period, valued at a remarkable USD 1.172 billion.
Speaking at the Mining in Motion Summit held at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, June 3, Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod Sammy Gyamfi revealed that between February and May 2025, the agency facilitated the purchase and export of over GH₵40 billion worth of ASM gold—approximately USD 4 billion—on behalf of the Bank of Ghana.
“This achievement demonstrates the massive potential of the ASM sector when formalised and properly integrated into the national economy,” Mr. Gyamfi stated.
According to the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), now operating under GoldBod, the total gross weight of ASM gold exported from January to May 2025 has reached 41.5 tonnes, setting a new national record in Ghana’s mining history.
Mr. Gyamfi stressed that this surge in gold exports, combined with prudent government monetary and fiscal policies, has significantly enhanced foreign exchange liquidity and bolstered Ghana’s foreign reserves.
“This, coupled with the prudent monetary and fiscal policies of the government, has significantly increased forex liquidity in the market and accelerated foreign reserves accumulation, leading to the sustained appreciation of the national currency and a positive impact on the living conditions of our people,” he added.
