Ghanaian gospel group Alabaster Box has filed a GHS15 million lawsuit against rapper Medikal over alleged copyright infringement and brand misrepresentation.
The legal action comes months after the group threatened to sue the rapper for lifting the intro of their popular “Welcome Song” and using it in one of his songs without permission. According to Alabaster Box, the excerpt was not only used without their consent but was also featured in a song with profane lyrics, which they say tarnishes their brand and misrepresents their values.
Breakdown of the claims:
-
GHS10 million for copyright infringement of their “Welcome Song”
-
GHS5 million as an exemplary penalty for using their brand in a song containing profane content

Legal fees and any additional costs the court may award
In their writ of claims, Alabaster Box revealed that although Medikal deleted the first ten seconds of the song from YouTube following the public backlash, the original version containing their copyrighted material is still available on platforms like Audiomack, Boomplay, Spotify, and Apple Music.
The group further expressed disappointment over what they see as a lack of respect for intellectual property rights, adding that this lawsuit is not just about protecting their work but also about upholding ethical standards in Ghana’s music industry.
