As someone familiar with various past presidents and executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), I can confidently state that Albert Kwabena Dwumfour’s leadership represents a significant leap forward. His accomplishments and positive impact on Ghanaian journalism are unmatched, making recognising and celebrating his outstanding contributions crucial.
Remarkable achievements have characterised Dwumfour’s administration (please check out Part 1), earning him the title of “Legacy President.” One of his most notable achievements is securing the bid to host the African Media Convention (AMC) in May 2024. This is a significant milestone, as the AMC is the largest gathering of journalists on the continent.
Dwumfour has excelled in refurbishing the Press Centre, which has undergone a dramatic transformation. This renovation has received praise from both visitors and journalists. In addition to improving the physical infrastructure, it has also enhanced the Association’s visibility.
Under his leadership, the GJA has seen a significant rise in membership applications, with over 400 received. This boost in membership highlights Dwumfour’s charismatic leadership and the Association’s increasing appeal.
The GJA Awards, organised under the leadership of Dwumfour, were truly landmark events that brought together journalists from diverse backgrounds, influential VVIP personalities, and a multitude of stakeholders from the media industry and beyond. These occasions not only celebrated journalistic excellence but also fostered a sense of community and camaraderie among attendees. The events garnered widespread acclaim for their organisation and ambience, culminating in a memorable experience for all involved. Notably, President Nana Akufo Addo showered praise on Dwumfour, commending him for hosting what he described as one of the finest dinner events he had ever attended, highlighting the significance and impact of these awards in promoting the media profession in Ghana.
Dwumfour has initiated a series of comprehensive programmes aimed at promoting ethical journalism and protecting the rights of journalists in the field. One significant initiative is the “See Something, Say Something to a Journalist” campaign. This campaign encourages community members to be vigilant and proactive by reporting any suspicious activities or information they may encounter directly to journalists. The goal is to empower the public to engage with the media constructively, ensuring that important issues are brought to light and that journalists can investigate and report them effectively. By fostering this relationship between citizens and the press, the campaign aims to enhance accountability and transparency within the community while also providing journalists with crucial insights that can help guide their reporting.
Furthermore, Dwumfour has actively championed press freedom, openly addressing the threats to and assaults on journalists. He has underscored the significance of accurate, balanced, and thorough reporting, urging journalists to uphold the GJA’s Code of Ethics, alongside numerous other accomplishments.
In conclusion, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour’s leadership has profoundly transformed Ghanaian journalism. His achievements and influence on the industry are indisputable, establishing a high benchmark for future leaders to aspire to. As a seasoned journalist, I can assert that Dwumfour’s administration represents one of the most significant advancements in Ghanaian journalism in recent years.
