The Medical Director of the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba has been suspended from his duties after a patient was allegedly abandoned in a bush at Gomoa Ojobi and left to die.
The decision came after an emergency meeting held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at the GHS Headquarters. During the meeting, the Medical Director acknowledged the incident but disputed some details reported by the media.
The GHS has established a committee to thoroughly examine the incident to ensure a fair and comprehensive investigation. The committee includes the Deputy Director-General of GHS, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon from the Ridge Hospital, representatives from the Ministry of Health and the Social Welfare Department, and a senior Nurse Manager.
In a move to prevent any potential influence on the investigation and ensure unrestricted access to all relevant information, the GHS decided to relieve the Medical Director of his duties temporarily.
The GHS has assured the public that appropriate actions will be taken based on the committee’s findings to address the situation and hold any responsible individuals accountable.
Health Minister Dr Bernard Okoe Boye has instructed the committee to submit its findings within 30 days.
It will be recalled that on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, a woman with P.O.P. on both legs, wrapped in a cloth with a wheelchair by her side, was found abandoned in a bush. Eyewitnesses in Gomoa Ojobi claimed that an ambulance from the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba left the woman there.
The patient, who was left at the mercy of the weather, passed away shortly after.
