Ghana’s esteemed National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, marks a remarkable milestone today as he turns 105 years old.

Sheikh Osmanu began his educational journey at home under the tutelage of his parents, Sheikh Imam Nuhu Sharubutu and Hajja Ayishatu Abbass.

His exceptional ability to recite the Quran led to further studies under eminent Islamic scholars in Kumasi, where he honed his knowledge and spirituality.

By 1974, Sheikh Sharubutu had earned recognition as a respected scholar within Muslim communities, eventually assuming leadership roles within the Tijaniyya sect.

In 1992, under President Jerry John Rawlings, the office of the National Chief Imam of Ghana was established, with Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu chosen as its inaugural leader, representing the voice of Muslims across the nation.

Throughout his tenure, Sheikh Sharubutu has been a champion of religious tolerance and harmony.

His historic visit to Accra’s Christ the King Catholic Church during an Easter service in 2019 symbolized his commitment to fostering unity and understanding among diverse religious communities.

Despite criticism from some quarters, Sheikh Sharubutu’s gesture exemplified his belief in peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
