Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has boldly stated that the Akufo-Addo-led government has created 2.1 million jobs since 2017.
According to him, over the past seven years, the government has successfully recruited 2.1 million individuals into various positions within both the public and private sectors.
Breaking down the numbers, the Vice President specified that the public sector welcomed 1.2 million new employees, while the private sector absorbed 975,000 individuals.
Dr. Alhaji Bawumia made this revelation during the launch of the Business and Employment Assistance Programme, an initiative led by the Youth and Employment Agency (YEA). The program aims to generate employment opportunities for 20,000 young people across the nation.
In his statement, the Vice President asserted, “No government in the fourth republic or the history of this country has been able to recruit this large number of people.”
As part of the flagship program’s implementation, the YEA plans to provide up to GHC500 grant support to 10,000 registered Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMSEs). This financial aid is intended to empower these enterprises to create more job opportunities and engage more youth in their workplaces.
Despite the achievements, Dr Alhaji Bawumia acknowledged that there is still a significant number of youths in the country seeking employment. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing this issue, stating, “We have a big job to create more jobs for the young people.”
Commending the YEA for its laudable initiative and underscoring the government’s dedication to job creation, the Vice President expressed hope that the youth would derive maximum benefits from the program.
Highlighting the broader context, Dr. Alhaji Bawumia affirmed that the government’s focus on job creation had resulted in the creation of more jobs than any previous administration in the country’s history.
“Unemployment was a real problem, and we even had the unemployment graduate association. Our focus, therefore, was to improve job creation through the public and private sector,” the Vice President stated.
“I can say with all humility that no government in the history of the fourth Republic has done this, and this cannot be challenged. It is a fact….. In spite of the unprecedented 1.2m jobs created more will be done to create more jobs for the Ghanaian youth due to the growing youth population of the country.”
