The Minister of Communications and Digitisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has assured Ghanaians that the Government of Ghana has no plans to sell its 30% shares in the Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited, commonly known as Vodafone Ghana.
According to her, Vodafone Ghana, holding the majority share of 70%, had already transferred its stake to the Telecel Group in February 2023.
Responding to a question posed by the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwame Dafeamekpor, whether the government has any plans of selling its shares in Vodafone Ghana, the Minister emphasized that the government was not considering such a move.
“Mr Speaker, The Government of Ghana has no plans of selling its thirty per cent (30%) shareholding in the Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited. Vodafone Ghana transferred its seventy per cent (70%) stake in the company to the Telecel Group in February 2023.”
Underlining the specifics of the shareholder agreement, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful clarified that the consent of the minority shareholder (Ghana Government) was not required for Vodafone Ghana, as the majority shareholder, to transfer or sell its shareholding in the Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited.
She stated, “Consent is not required under the shareholding agreement.”
When pressed by Mr Dafeamekpor to disclose the value of the 70% share transferred by Vodafone Group Plc to the Telecel Group, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful redirected the focus to the primary question.
She stated, “Mr Speaker, the question was specific, as to whether Government has any plans of selling its shares in Vodafone Ghana Ltd. The answer has also been specific, that (the) Government has no such plans.”
Mrs Owusu-Ekuful suggested that if further details were required, a substantive question could be filed, allowing her to provide a comprehensive response.
“If the Honourable Member requires any further information, I suggest that he files a substantive question to which I will come and give a response. I do not have that information at the top of my head. Thank you, Mr Speaker.”
