Superintendent George Asare of the Ghana Police Service has alleged the existence of a business relationship between the Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, and former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Northern Regional Chairman, Chief Bugri Naabu.
Appearing before a parliamentary committee investigating a leaked tape in which he and a Commissioner of Police engaged in discussions with Naabu about ousting the IGP, Superintendent Asare claimed that Naabu had benefited from contracts with the police service.
He suggested that this relationship was the reason behind IGP Dampare instructing Bugri Naabu to record a private conversation with the police officers, which was subsequently leaked.
During his testimony on September 4, 2023, Superintendent Asare was asked by the committee’s chairman, Samuel Atta Akyea, whether he had appeared before the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) regarding the matter. Superintendent Asare confirmed that he had and offered to provide further details.
“After the leakage of the ‘so-called’ leaked tape, I was invited by the NIB and interrogated as regards who did the recording and who leaked it.”
He confirmed that his boss, COP Mensah was also invited to the NIB on the same matter before Bugri Naabu’s aide and secretary were picked up “and later Bugri Naabu went there and lied as usual.”
“He has lied on several occasions. I have Alhaji Bugri Naabu on tape, everything he came to say here, on video in his office. His relationship with IGP and contracts, 40,000 boots contract…” Superintendent Asare claimed.
Chairman Atta-Akyea subsequently reminded Asare of his promise to share more information with the committee in-camera.
