Amnesty International-Ghana, a human rights organization, has strongly voiced its opposition to the attempts made by Members of Parliament to pass the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.
The organization maintains its stance against the Promotion of Proper Sexual Human Rights and the Ghanaian Family Values Bill in its current form, asserting that it promotes hate towards individuals who identify as LGBTQ+.
This comes after all Ghanaian Members of Parliament unanimously voiced their support for the passage of the anti-LGBTQ bill which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ and related activities, including the promotion, advocacy, or propaganda of such activities. It also aims to provide protection and support for children, as well as individuals who are victims or accused of LGBTQ+ activities.
All Ghanaian MPs unanimously back approval of anti-LGBTQ+ bill
Speaking to Accra-based Citi News moments after the bill went through the second reading stage, Genevieve Partington, the Country Director for Amnesty International-Ghana, expressed concern over certain provisions saying the bill in its current form still requires revisions.
“There are so many things I can pull out from the law. I’m an ally, I’m identified as an ally, it also said from the Bill that, if you are an ally of the LGBTQ community, that means you are living amongst people who have a different sexual orientation. I don’t see how that affects my life in any way. How does a man sleeping with a man within closed doors in their bedroom affect my life?” she quizzed.
