Association of Bullion Van operators in Ghana withdraws soft-skinned vans following robbery incidents

The Association of Bullion Van Operators in Ghana has made the decision to withdraw all soft-skinned bullion vans from operations across the country.

This follows a warning to banks not to accept soft-skinned vans into their premises, and a threat from the Ghana Police Service to withdraw its officers from bank escorts if the soft-skinned vans are not removed.

Alhaji Iddi Sumiala, President of the Association, announced that armoured vans will now be used for cash pickups instead and reassured the public that no soft-skinned vehicle will be used for transporting cash.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, Alhaji Sumaila emphasized the Association’s commitment to ensuring that all banks in the country utilize the available 150 armoured bullion vans before the specified deadline.

This decision has been prompted by the increasing incidents of armed robbery attacks targeting bullion vans in Ghana. The latest of such attacks took place last month in Ablekuma, Accra, where four armed robbers targeted a bullion van, resulting in the death of the police escort.

The Association of Bullion Van Operators aims to enhance the security and safety of cash transportation operations in the country by transitioning to armoured vans, which offer a higher level of protection against robbery attempts.
