Atewa Matters Campaign Unveils Banner On Spintex Road To Push For National Park Status

The Atewa Matters Campaign, supported by Nature’s Heartbeat, has unveiled a banner at the JCS Investments Ltd bus stop on Spintex Road to raise awareness and drive signatures for a petition calling for Atewa Forest Reserve to be declared a National Park.

The banner was unveiled on Monday, 17th August. The petition can be accessed at bit.ly/MakeAtewaNationalPark.

The campaign highlights the urgent need for greater protection for the Atewa Forest Reserve.

Once a pristine forest, Atewa was declared a Forest Reserve in 1926. It is designated a Globally Significant Biodiversity Area and is the source of the Birim, Ayensu and Densu rivers – providing water to over 5 million Ghanaians.

The forest is also habitat to endangered fauna and flora. However, campaigners say it is currently “under siege” from illegal miners, poachers and irresponsible loggers who are destroying it.

Eco-Conscious Citizens thanked JCS Investments for sponsoring the advertising space at the bus stop, saying the banner will help widen public awareness of the Atewa Matters Campaign.

The group also expressed gratitude to A Rocha Ghana and the funders of the Atewa Matters Campaign for their support.
