The Ghana Police Service has arrested ten individuals alleged to be behind a sophisticated online fraud operation involving fake food delivery platforms that duped unsuspecting customers across the country.
According to a statement issued by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Service, the arrests were made by the Cybercrime Unit after weeks of intelligence-led investigations. The suspects are accused of creating counterfeit websites and social media pages impersonating reputable food brands such as Papaye, Pizzaman, KFC, and Mawarko to extort money from victims.
The initial six suspects, Wonder Sakpiti, Sedinam Amaglo, Godsway Dunyo, Angela Agblemekpe, Mathew Aheto, and Fafali Amoah, were apprehended during a special operation at Sogakope on October 1, 2025.
Police investigations revealed that customers who ordered food through these fake platforms were asked to make advance payments via mobile money but never received their orders.
In some cases, the fraudsters reportedly gained unauthorised access to victims’ mobile money wallets and bank accounts under the pretext of assisting with transactions, subsequently withdrawing funds without consent.
The Police further disclosed that the operation led to the recovery of several digital devices believed to have been used in the scam. These devices are currently undergoing forensic analysis.
Following additional intelligence, the CID conducted another raid on October 12 at Haatso in Accra, where four more suspects, including the alleged syndicate leader, Elijah Sotama Etse, alias “Pop Smoke,” along with Elliot Sotama Atsu, Jethro Atsu, and Obed Selasi Agboli, were arrested.
Twelve mobile phones were seized during the operation.
All ten suspects are in police custody and are expected to be arraigned before the court today, Monday, October 13, 2025.
The Police have urged members of the public who may have fallen victim to the fraudulent platforms to report to the nearest police station to assist with ongoing investigations.
The statement, signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the CID, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to cracking down on cybercrime and protecting citizens from online fraud.
