Kennedy Agyapong Urges NPP to Resolve Internal Issues Before Choosing 2028 Flagbearer

A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has cautioned the party against rushing into the selection of a presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections without first addressing the root causes of its defeat in 2024.

Speaking to NPP constituency chairmen on Saturday, June 21, 2024, the former Assin Central Member of Parliament stressed the need for introspection and unity, warning that failure to do so could cost the party its future.

“If you don’t solve the problems, you can bring Jesus Christ as your presidential candidate, you will still not make it. Because all of us here are going to campaign, but what message are we going to give? We don’t know the causes of our defeat, so I am of the opinion that we solve all these internal issues before we rush to go and select a presidential candidate.”

His comments come in the wake of a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on June 17 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, where party leaders officially set Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the date for the NPP’s presidential primaries.

The meeting, chaired by First Vice Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey due to the unavailability of National Chairman Stephen Ntim, brought together prominent figures, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako.

While the party has not yet opened nominations for the upcoming presidential election, key figures, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, have already declared their intentions to contest.
