For members of the Ghanaian public who are connoisseurs of vocal talent, you absolutely must not miss the musical offering taking place on Saturday, January 10, at 6:00 p.m., at the British Council Hall, Liberia Hall, Accra.
For one night only, legendary songstress Angela Watson from New York City (“la sua voce magica”) will be joined on stage by Cameroonian tenor sensation Guy Bertrand K and the extraordinary Nigerian lyric tenor Kelvin Uhondo.
They will be supported in the orchestra pit by pianist George Francois of Ashesi University, clarinettist Keyara Fleece, a band teacher at Lincoln School, among others.
The programme is a superlative collection of favourites.
The first half of the programme, dedicated to classical voice, presents solos, duets, and trios featuring works by Rossini, Puccini, Nino Rota, Giordani, Gershwin, and Leonard Cohen’s famous Hallelujah.
The second half features Gospel classics by Mahalia Jackson, Luther Barnes, the Clark Sisters, Richard Smallwood, the Brooklyn Tabernacle, and Edwin Hawkins.
This concert is titled “For Every Mountain – Classical Meets Gospel”.
It coincides with the 53rd birthday of New Horizon, which began on January 10, 1972, with three students in the home of its founder, Madame Salome Anyorkor François, of blessed memory.
The concert title reflects Madame François’ deep, abiding faith and belief that for every obstacle (mountain), there is a corresponding blessing and a reason to say “Hallelujah!”.
The concert is a musical expression of deep gratitude and praise to God for helping New Horizon overcome the seemingly impossible challenges, trials, and difficulties it has faced over the years.
The concert is organised by the New Horizon Special School and La Foundation for the Arts (LAFA) to raise funds to support educational and art therapy programmes.
The New Horizon Special School has been an institution focused on special education in Ghana for 53 years.
LAFA is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to artistic excellence and cultural preservation. It has partnered with the New Horizon Special School to empower underrepresented communities.
