Parliament will reconvene today, Tuesday, September 29, for an emergency sitting following a petition by the Minority Caucus.
The NPP Caucus has over time expressed concerns about the circumstances surrounding a series of recent cocaine seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana.
Against this backdrop, the Minority Caucus, led by First Deputy Minority Whip and Tolon MP Habib Iddrisu, invoked Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution to request the one-day extraordinary sitting to investigate the seizures, including the recent interception of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine at France’s Port of Dunkirk from a container reportedly shipped from Ghana.
The petition is among others seeking answers from relevant state institutions on the circumstances surrounding the seizures and Ghana’s role in the movement of the consignments.
The House is also expected to examine how the containers were processed and cleared for export, the agencies responsible for inspecting and monitoring such consignments, and whether there were lapses in Ghana’s customs and security systems.
