The Hohoe Municipal Assembly in the Volta Region has expressed solidarity with residents affected by the recent flooding in the municipality and assured them of its continued support.
The flooding, which occurred on Monday, resulted in the inundation of homes and properties in some communities, leaving several residents affected.
The Municipal Coordinating Director, Wisdom Kporngor, in a statement issued on behalf of the Assembly, said that following reports of the incident, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) mobilised the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Assembly Members and other relevant stakeholders to assist with evacuation efforts and assess the situation.
According to him, the coordinated response was also aimed at safeguarding lives and property while providing immediate assistance to affected residents.
Mr Kporngor said the MCE subsequently visited the affected areas, where he interacted with affected residents and families and expressed sympathy over the difficulties caused by the flooding.
He added that the Assembly had also taken steps to address potential public health risks associated with the disaster, including convening a meeting of the Municipal Public Health Emergency Committee to assess the emerging health situation and coordinate appropriate preventive and response measures.
The Municipal Coordinating Director urged residents in affected and low-lying areas to remain vigilant and adhere to strict sanitation and hygiene practices to prevent the outbreak of waterborne and other diseases.
He further advised residents to avoid unnecessary contact with floodwater and comply with directives from health personnel and other relevant authorities.
The Assembly also appealed to individuals, philanthropists, civil society organisations, corporate institutions and other well-meaning organisations and persons willing to assist the affected households to channel relief donations through the Municipal Assembly.
Mr Kporngor stated that the arrangement would enable the Assembly to properly coordinate and document donations and ensure their equitable distribution among affected households.
