A joint security operation led by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has resulted in the arrest of 36 people suspected of engaging in illegal mining at Osino in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region.
The operation, which took place at dawn on Saturday, November 8, 2025, is part of intensified government efforts to curb illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which continues to endanger Ghana’s rivers, forests, and farmlands.
Officials from NAIMOS said the suspects include 32 Nigerien nationals and four Ghanaians who were allegedly operating at various unlicensed mining sites in the area. The arrests followed weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering that led to a coordinated swoop by security personnel.
Mining equipment believed to have been used for the illegal activity was also confiscated during the exercise.
According to NAIMOS, the arrested individuals will be screened and handed over to the relevant authorities for prosecution or repatriation where appropriate.
The Secretariat reiterated its determination to sustain the nationwide campaign against illegal mining, stressing that similar enforcement actions will be intensified across all regions.
It also called on local communities to collaborate with law enforcement by providing credible information to help combat galamsey.
