Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has voiced his support for the deliberate inclusion of home-based players in Ghana’s 2026 World Cup squad.
His endorsement aligns with calls from football administrators and lawmakers for local players to feature in the Black Stars’ squad for the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Their argument is backed by FIFA’s decision to allocate over $300 million to clubs whose players participate in the World Cup, an initiative that could offer significant financial relief to Ghanaian teams.
Kwakye Ofosu believes the arrangement presents a unique opportunity for both players and domestic clubs.
“I agree. There’s a precedent. At the last World Cup, there were local players. Local players and local teams benefited, so I see no reason why we cannot repeat the same,” he told Joy Sports.
The Minister further noted that the expanded 26-man squad provides ample room for in-form players from the Ghana Premier League to earn selection.
“It’s a 26-man squad; not everybody gets to play. There are some who will never touch a football anyway. So why don’t we utilise the opportunity to select the best-performing local players?
“At the same time, our local clubs will also benefit from this package, so I think it’s a win-win for everyone. I support it fully.”
