Blood Moon Tonight: Ghana to Witness Rare Total Lunar Eclipse

Ghanaians will have the chance to witness a rare celestial spectacle tonight, Sunday, September 7, 2025, as a total lunar eclipse—popularly known as a Blood Moon—graces the skies.

According to astronomical forecasts, the Moon will rise in Ghana just as the eclipse is underway. The greatest phase of the eclipse will be visible from around 6:11 p.m. GMT, when the Moon appears low on the eastern horizon. The total eclipse will end at approximately 6:53 p.m., while the partial shadow will linger until 7:56 p.m. The penumbral phase, the faintest stage, will last till around 8:55 p.m.

This means stargazers in Ghana will see the latter stages of the total eclipse and the gradual brightening of the Moon as it emerges from Earth’s shadow.

What is a Blood Moon?

A “Blood Moon” occurs during a total lunar eclipse, when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon. Instead of going completely dark, the Moon takes on a reddish or coppery glow. This happens because Earth’s atmosphere bends and filters sunlight, scattering shorter blue wavelengths and allowing longer red wavelengths to reach the Moon’s surface.

Astronomers note that this reddish tint makes the Moon look eerily dramatic, inspiring myths and cultural stories for centuries. Scientifically, however, it is a predictable and harmless phenomenon.

A Rare Sight for Ghana

While lunar eclipses are fairly common globally, the timing of this one makes it particularly significant for Ghana, as the country will see the eclipse just as the Moon rises. Clear skies in the east will be crucial for the best view.

Experts recommend watching from an open area with a clear view of the eastern horizon, free from tall buildings or trees. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye, binoculars, or even a camera lens.

Tonight’s spectacle is expected to last a total of 83 minutes, though Ghanaians will mainly witness the final stages as the Moon climbs higher into the evening sky.

Scientists have assured the public that Sunday’s total lunar eclipse poses no risk to viewers and can be safely observed without any protective equipment.
