The leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has rendered an unqualified apology to the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, following recent media attacks on his person.
In a meeting held on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, the GRNMA delegation expressed regret over the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the government in addressing issues affecting the nursing profession and the health sector at large.
The Health Minister, who graciously accepted the apology, urged the Association to prioritise dialogue and collaboration in advancing the welfare of healthcare professionals. He assured the GRNMA of his readiness to work closely with them to strengthen healthcare delivery nationwide.
Mr Akandoh highlighted some of the government’s achievements in the sector, including the successful integration of 13,500 nurses into the public payroll, the establishment of the Ghana Medical Training Fund (GMTF), and the retooling of several government health facilities. He further noted that the government has paid arrears on nursing training allowances, cleared outstanding National Health Insurance claims, and absorbed half of the admission fees for students in nursing training institutions.
The Minister pledged his commitment to the successful implementation of the collective bargaining agreement, which is expected to improve conditions of service for nurses, while reiterating the government’s broader agenda of transforming the health sector towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
During the engagement, the GRNMA leadership tabled several concerns requiring urgent attention to enhance healthcare service delivery across the country.
The delegation was led by the Association’s current President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, alongside the General Secretary, Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, former President Alice Darkoa Asare-Allotey, and immediate past President Dr. Krobea Asante.
The Minister called on all stakeholders and the general public to remain calm and supportive as the government works towards resolving challenges confronting the health sector.
