Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, says the people of Akwatia are poised to elect the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) candidate, Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo, as their next Member of Parliament in Tuesday’s September 2 by-election.
Speaking during campaign activities in the constituency on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Sam George hailed the candidate’s efforts, noting that Baidoo has already shown the ability to lobby for development. According to him, the provision of ICT equipment to Senior High Schools and the resolution of network challenges at Akyem Topreman are clear signs that Baidoo has the connections needed to deliver results even before officially taking office as MP.
Sam George, joined by Tourism Minister Dzifa Gomashie, Deputy Communications Minister Mohammed Adam Sukparu, Dome-Kwabenya MP, Elikplim Akurugu and Eastern Regional Chairman of the NDC, Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor, led a church-based campaign that took them to several congregations in Akwatia on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
“At one point, I asked myself, is this a church service or a rally? The congregation was dancing to ‘Sepere Sepere’ and chanting ‘Mahama bɛyɛ.’ That showed the confidence people have that Lawyer Bernard will bring Akwatia the development it deserves,” he told newsalertgh.com.
The Ningo-Prampram MP stressed that the NDC government under John Dramani Mahama is determined to ensure Akwatia receives its fair share of infrastructure and social amenities.
“When roads are fixed or when ICT equipment is supplied to schools, nobody checks your political colours before you benefit. That is the difference between an NDC government and the rest,” he said.
He also praised the work of the Mahama administration within just eight months in office, insisting that Akwatia, which had long been deprived of its share of national development, was now beginning to see change with Baidoo’s active engagement.
“In only a few weeks of campaigning, Bernard has knocked on doors and delivered interventions. Imagine what he can achieve with the full mandate of the people,” Sam George said.
The Akwatia By-Election
The by-election was triggered by the sudden death of sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi. Three candidates are contesting the poll: Bernard Bediako Baidoo Esq. of the NDC, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Owusu Patrick of the Liberal People’s Party (LPG).
