The event was graced by the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, and the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Abdulai Ayariga.

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, described the launch of the NAP in the Volta Region as a “pivotal moment” for both the youth and the economic transformation of the region. He explained that the initiative, a flagship programme of President John Mahama’s administration, is designed as a direct response to youth unemployment and skills gaps in Ghana.

“Through this initiative, the government is not just creating opportunities but building a skilled workforce that will shape the future of this country.”

He further disclosed that the programme is backed by a GH¢300 million allocation in the 2025 national budget to ensure its successful rollout and sustainability.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Osman Ayariga, hailed the programme as one of the “boldest expressions” of the NYA’s mission to empower young people.

“The National Apprenticeship Programme is a bridge between raw talents and employable skills, between dreams and livelihoods, between potential and prosperity.”

He added that the initiative ties in seamlessly with the Volta Region’s long-standing “heritage of resilience and industry,” commending the resourcefulness and discipline of the region’s youth.

For the pilot phase in the Volta Region, a total of 2,060 apprentices have been enrolled and will undergo training under 412 Master Craft Persons across various trades. Beneficiaries are expected to receive free, high-quality, competency-based training, monthly stipends, and essential start-up equipment upon graduation.

The ceremony was memorable by the administration of a matriculation pledge, as well as the symbolic presentation of identification cards and training materials to the apprentices, marking the official start of their journey under the programme.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the NAP will not only reduce unemployment but also stimulate entrepreneurship, promote self-reliance, and enhance the region’s economic fortunes.
