PLAYBACK: Ghana Marks Maiden National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving

Ghana is today observing its first-ever National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, a historic milestone in the country’s spiritual and civic life. The programme is currently underway in Accra and across all 16 regions.

Thousands of Ghanaians, clad in white attire, have gathered at the Forecourt of the State House to join in prayer, thanksgiving, and reflection.

Led by President John Dramani Mahama, the national observance features major interfaith events, including the grand interdenominational Christian service currently ongoing and a Muslim service at the Ghana National Mosque in Kanda scheduled for 12 noon.

Held under the theme “One Nation Under God: Giving Thanks, Seeking Grace,” the day is focused on offering gratitude for national blessings and seeking divine guidance for the future.

Special religious services are also taking place in regional capitals and major towns, with active participation from both Christian and Muslim communities.

The idea of a National Prayer Day was first proposed by President Mahama during the 2024 election campaign. It was at a meeting with religious leaders in Ho that he called for a day dedicated to national gratitude and spiritual renewal—drawing inspiration from similar traditions in other countries.

By establishing July 1 as Ghana’s official National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, the country now observes a dual celebration, as the date also marks Republic Day.
