The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has officially announced the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away peacefully on Monday, April 21, 2025. The Holy Father, known for his humility, compassion, and dedication to the marginalised, served as the 266th Successor of St. Peter and spiritual leader of the global Catholic Church.
In a statement issued by the President of the GCBC, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, the Catholic Bishop of Sunyani, the Conference expressed profound sorrow over the Pope’s passing, while affirming hope in the Resurrection and the eternal promises of Christ.
“His life and ministry were a powerful witness to the Gospel values of love, mercy, and compassion,” the statement read. “Pope Francis served the Church with profound humility, unwavering faith, and a tireless commitment to the poor, to peace, and the care of the environment—our common home.”
In response to the Pope’s passing, the GCBC has called on all clergy, consecrated men and women, and lay faithful across Ghana to offer prayers for the repose of his soul. The bishops also announced several key activities to honour the Pope’s legacy:
-
A National Memorial Mass will be held on a date to be announced, bringing together bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful from across the country for a solemn celebration of the Pope’s life.

Local Requiem Masses and Holy Hours will be organised in archdioceses, dioceses, and parishes nationwide to reflect on the Pope’s teachings and lasting impact.
-
Catholic institutions, including schools and seminaries, are encouraged to host prayer services, discussions, and educational events to help the faithful—especially young people—understand and celebrate the legacy of Pope Francis.
The GCBC also urged all Catholics to pray for the global Church during this time of mourning and to spiritually prepare for the election of the Pope’s successor.
“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen,” the statement concluded.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was elected Supreme Pontiff in March 2013 and served for over a decade, becoming a globally admired figure for his message of mercy, simplicity, and solidarity with the poor.
Further updates, including details of the National Memorial Mass, will be communicated in the coming days.
