Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has condemned what he describes as a “needless invasion” of his home by armed state security operatives following his demand for a probe into two suspicious flights that landed at the Kotoka International Airport in March.
Armed men from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and National Security stormed the Spintex residence of the Assin South MP in a bid to arrest him over the said claims.
The MP had alleged during a recent press briefing that the aircraft was allowed to land under questionable circumstances and called for an urgent probe into the matter, citing national security concerns.
Following the allegation, Rev. Ntim Fordjour reportedly declined an invitation from the NIB to assist in investigations. A second request was made through the Speaker of Parliament, but before any formal response was given, his home was reportedly raided.
In a strongly worded statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Rev. Fordjour said the raid was an act of political intolerance and a major dent in Ghana’s democratic gains.
He also revealed that former President Akufo-Addo had personally called him to express concern and solidarize with him and his family over the incident.
“Yesterday, as the former President of the Republic HE Nana Akufo-Addo @NAkufoAddo placed a call to me and conveyed his kind thoughts to me and my family, following the needless invasion of our home without a warrant by men purportedly sent by the government for raising matters of serious concerns worth probing on behalf of the Minority Caucus, I came to appreciate the more, how tolerance shapes our democracy.”
“In the eight years extraordinary leadership of President Akufo-Addo, no opposition MP was harassed by the state security apparatus for demanding probes in the discharge of their parliamentary oversight. Every fierce criticism and demand for probe by the opposition MPs were graciously accommodated by President Akufo-Addo without threats and harassments.”
“The level of intolerance demonstrated by President Mahama in his reaction to a press statement of the Minority Cause simply demanding probes into various matters of urgent and serious public interest, is unprecedented and a major setback in our democratic pursuit.”
“This is indeed beyond the culture of silence. Truth will stand always!”
