Joseph Azumah: Akrofuom MP to Sponsor Licensing of 300 Okada Riders with GH₵100,000

The Member of Parliament for Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region, Joseph Azumah, has commited an amount of GH₵100,000 to sponsor the licensing of some 300 commercial motorcycle operators, commonly known as okada riders. The move is expected to help sensitise them on the upcoming government reforms targeted at regularising their activities.

Speaking at a community outreach session, the first-time National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislator explained that the reforms are aimed at legalising their operations, reducing police harassment, and ultimately improving their livelihood.

Mr Azumah also assured the riders of his commitment to assist them in navigating the new system. He pledged to lead efforts in helping them access government-sanctioned training programmes and acquire the necessary licences to operate legally.

“As your representative, I am committed to ensuring you benefit fully from these reforms. I will work closely with the appropriate agencies to ensure you receive proper training and the right documentation,” he said.

The proposed reforms, which are part of a national initiative to regulate the okada industry, outline key requirements for all operators. These include:

  • A minimum age of 25 years

  • A valid national identification card

  • Purchase and use of appropriate protective gear

  • Enrolment in certified training programmes

  • Issuance of a special DVLA Okada Riding Card

  • Use of a designated yellow number plate for okada operations

  • Availability of helmets for passengers, with clearly numbered tags

  • Strict adherence to all traffic regulations

Operators who fail to comply with the new rules risk facing penalties of up to 100 penalty units or a custodial sentence.

The meeting, which drew dozens of okada riders from across the constituency, ended with a renewed sense of cooperation between the MP and the rider community, with many expressing appreciation for his proactive approach.
