Ghana’s outgoing Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has been decorated with the nation’s highest honour, the “Order of the Star of Ghana – Officer Award,” at the 2024 National Honours ceremony held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Monday, December 30, 2024.
Dr. Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate in the just-ended 2024 elections, was recognized for his public service over the past eight years as Vice President. His acknowledgement comes after his defeat to former President John Dramani Mahama of the largest opposition National Democratic Congress.
Dr. Bawumia’s running mate in the 2024 elections, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh was also honoured during the event. He received the “Order of the Volta – Officer Award” for his service to the nation.
The Order of the Star of Ghana is the highest national honour, with the Officer rank representing exceptional service in both the public and private sectors.
The ceremony celebrated distinguished Ghanaians from various sectors, including civil service, the military, police, judiciary, education, public health, sports, culture, commerce, and agriculture.
The Award was instituted in 1960 to honour distinguished and deserving Ghanaians in various disciplines of national development and endeavour, celebrating creativity, innovation, excellence and hard work.
The maiden ceremony of the National Honours and Awards was held when Ghana became a Republic under the leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Since then, the initiative to honour deserving Ghanaians and foreign nationals has become part of the nation.
