AUDIO: Deployment of Soldiers Would Have Changed Outcome in 50-60 Constituencies – Obiri Boahen

A former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has described the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections as unprecedented and unusual.

“… it is no small issue because it is not something normal nor ordinary… First, consider the number of seats obtained by the NPP; it’s something around the eighties. Secondly, check the collation centres or electoral areas; it is just not normal,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Okay FM.

Reflecting on the factors contributing to the party’s poor performance, Obiri Boahen cited the absence of military presence at polling stations as a significant disadvantage for the NPP.

“I believe that if soldiers were deployed, the story would have been different in about fifty to sixty constituencies,” he said.

He further criticized the NPP’s internal electoral processes, describing the delegate system as detrimental to the party’s success. Obiri Boahen urged the party to consider reforms, including expanding the electoral college to involve all card-bearing members.

Additionally, the former NPP General Secretary accused the party’s leadership of disregarding critical voices and failing to address concerns raised by figures like himself.

On Monday, December 9, 2024, Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa officially declared John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the winner of the election with 6,328,397 votes.

The NPP’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured 4,657,304 votes.

In parliamentary contests, the NDC claimed a commanding majority with over 180 seats, while the NPP managed to secure just over 80 seats.
