The Electoral Commission (EC) has ordered the recall and reprinting of ballot papers for the Eastern and Western Regions following a security breach involving the initial batch.
Speaking at an emergency press conference today, Sunday, December 1, 2024, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa explained that the decision was prompted by a National Security report.
The report revealed that a defaced ballot paper, meant for destruction, was taken out of Checkpoint Printing Limited Printing House, the company responsible for the initial printing.
To address the issue, the EC has tasked Dark Press and Innolink to reprint the ballot papers. The new set will include enhanced security features to distinguish them from the previous ones.
As a result of the recall, the special voting exercise for the Eastern and Western Regions, originally scheduled for Monday, December 2, has been postponed to Thursday, December 5. The general election will proceed as planned on Saturday, December 7.
The EC assured the public that all political parties and candidates have been informed and have agreed to the recall and reprinting process.
