The Rotary Club of Accra-Airport has successfully held its 7th annual “Arise For Polio” fundraiser at Velvet Green in East Legon, Accra. The event held on October 18, 2024, aimed to raise funds and awareness for polio eradication and was attended by Rotarians, District representatives, healthcare professionals, and key stakeholders such as WHO, UNICEF, Ghana Health Services, and Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.
Nana Awuku Sakyi, Akyempemhene of Amanokrom, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the significant role of traditional leaders in promoting healthcare and disease prevention. He highlighted how local chiefs have been crucial in mobilizing communities for vaccination campaigns, such as the 2019 polio initiative, and called for continued collaboration between local authorities and health organizations.
“Our traditional leaders have always been at the forefront of promoting public health. By empowering them with knowledge and resources, we not only secure today but also prepare for future health challenges,” he stated.

Rotary Club President, Rtn Alice Otoo-Ocran, welcomed attendees and shared the history of the “Arise For Polio” initiative, which began in 2018. She underscored the Club’s commitment to Rotary International’s mission to eradicate polio and highlighted the impressive funds raised over the years.
“Our strength as a club has always been in giving to the Rotary Foundation. This fundraiser provides an opportunity to engage corporate partners and individuals in supporting Rotary’s top priority—ending polio,” she said.
Since its inception, the “Arise For Polio” event has raised over $100,000 for the Polio Plus fund, including $15,167 in 2023. This year’s fundraiser exceeded expectations, collecting an impressive $11,289.85, continuing the Club’s tradition of surpassing its $10,000 goal. Previous years saw similar successes:

- 2018: $15,400
- 2019: $10,711
- 2020: $14,067
- 2021: $24,994
- 2022: $10,649

In addition to fundraising, the event played a crucial role in raising awareness.
“Awareness is just as vital as the funds we raise,” Rtn Otoo-Ocran noted, adding that the event was broadcast live across social media platforms and Rotary networks to reach a broader audience.

She also acknowledged the contributions of corporate sponsors and individuals, thanking attendees for their support and partnership in the fight against polio.
