The Ghana Police Service has filed an injunction application seeking to block a planned demonstration by a group called Democracy Hub. The protest was scheduled to take place at the Jubilee House from Thursday, September 21st, to Saturday, September 23rd, 2023.
In a statement, the police have revealed that they are awaiting a court decision before proceeding further on this matter.
In the meantime, they have called upon the public to ignore any calls from individuals or groups encouraging them to participate in the demonstration at the Jubilee House. The police have also emphasized the importance of the protest organizers following the proper legal procedures to ensure public order and safety.
Democracy Hub, the group behind the planned demonstration, has accused the government of mishandling the economy and has called for improved relief measures for the suffering people of Ghana.
It’s worth noting that the demonstration coincides with the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, which is set to be observed nationwide. On Tuesday, September 19th, the organizers held a press conference to inform their members about the measures in place to ensure a smooth and successful protest. They had earlier assured protesters that all necessary logistics, including mattresses, tents, and mosquito nets, had been arranged for those planning to stay overnight at the Jubilee House during the three-day demonstration.
