Supt George Asare, one of the senior police officers implicated in the alleged plot to remove IGP Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has detailed how Bugri Naabu informed him that he had recommended Dr Dampare for the IGP job during his testimony.
During his appearance before the Parliamentary Committee on Monday, September 4, 2023, as the fourth witness in the probe into the alleged secret plot, Supt Asare defended his belief in the former NPP Northern Regional Chairman’s ability to influence the selection of an IGP.
He said that revelation convinced him that Mr Naabu had the power to influence authorities and potentially advocate for COP George Alex Mensah as the IGP.
“When we met him, in the course of our conversation, he did indicate that he recommended the current IGP to the President,” he explained.
The focal point of the investigation revolves around a leaked audio recording featuring police officers discussing the possibility of replacing the current IGP, Dr George Akuffo Dampare.
Three police officers allegedly connected to the tape were summoned to assist the Ad-hoc committee’s investigation.
Supt Asare played a pivotal role in arranging the meeting between Mr Naabu and COP Alex Mensah, and his voice was one of those heard in the secret recording, suggesting that IGP Dampare’s actions could jeopardize the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections.
Despite acknowledging his trust in Mr Naabu’s potential influence in appointing COP Alex Mensah as IGP, Supt Asare emphasized that he did not actively seek any appointment or lobby for any candidate. He added that when a politician makes such claims, it is wise to leave them unverified.
